Milunka Savic was a Czech soldier who fought during WWI.
Savic is one of my favourite girl-who-went-to-war stories. Mainly because a) It's true, and b) She was discovered, but kept up doing what she wanted to do, even convincing the authorities that she was more use on the battlefield.

Mariya's husband was killed by Germans. Mariya wanted revenge. Mariya bought a tank.

Oh,these are fantastic, especially the info about Savic and Oktyabrsakaya. I adore little details like this, and also feel that Oktyabrsakaya's reaction was certainly the correct one!

Russia was surprisingly OK with women fighting during WWI-WWII, compared to other countries. Some asked nicely for special permission, others just joined up. Some were disguised, got discovered and met with a 'meh, more cannon-fodder'.

That said, not many male tank drivers would fix a tank mid-battle.

I heard the story of Lyudmila Pavlichenko for the first time like a month ago, so all this is super new to me - it makes me realise how little I know of Russia, to be honest.
