At this point if I have a circadian rhythm it seems to be measured in days, but last night after two doctor's appointments and an evening of virtual seminars through the euphemistically designated career center, I fell over for something like a cumulative thirteen hours and still got through this afternoon's calendar of calling more doctors and the next stage of the career center in time to run out into a cold pastel sunset out of which the occasional flake of snow drifted with insulting singularity. I am delighted by the rediscovery of silent Holmes and also by my camera's cooperation when trying again for the beautiful fungi I had spotted on an earlier walk, clustered on the stump of what used to be a sidewalk tree and has now pivoted to Richard Dadd. I dreamed intensely and have no idea what Alex Horne was doing in there.

Hi, everyone! I’m templefugate, and it's about time I gifted everyone with another set of prompts this week.

As a reminder, we are using a new posting schedule. Sundays are for Lonely Prompts and sharing the fills that you completed during the week, Tuesdays and Thursdays are for new themes and prompts, and Saturdays will remain a Free for All.

Today's theme is time. Prompts should have anything to do with time - be it time travel, aging, time loops, time lords, and so on.

Just a few rules:
No more than five prompts in a row.
No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
Use the character's full names and the fandom's full name
No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here.
If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the above-mentioned spoiler cut.

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...
+ The X-Files, Dana Scully & Fox Mulder, stuck in a time loop
+ Knights of Guinevere, Frankie & Andi, better times
+ Any, any, cuckoo clock

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community.

While the use of LJ's advanced search options is available, bookmarking the links of prompts you like might work better for searching in the future.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site, please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site but you are still more than welcome to participate.

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so…and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

Challenge 283:
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Whether it’s a job interview, your first day at a new school, or an audience with royalty, first impressions can be important. But they aren’t always easy! Sometimes everything works out, and it’s love (or job offer) at first sight; other times, you trip on a shoelace you could have sworn wasn’t untied five minutes ago, or stub your toe and say a word you shouldn’t say in front of your boss’s boss’s boss, or a supervolcano erupts and you have to immediately cut the interview short to go suit up and save the world.

What kind of first impressions do your characters make? Good ones? Bad ones? Memorable ones, for all the right or wrong reasons?

Write a story about first impressions.

BONUS GOAL: All Suited Up

If your submission features someone in a suit, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

Challenge ends Monday, December 15 at 9:00PM EST.
• Post submissions as new entries using the template in the profile
• Tag this week's entries as: [#] submission, 283 – first impressions
• If you have questions about this challenge, please ask them here

not even stylistically, i'm actually mostly thinking of project management and general peace of mind.

As the title indicates, "Threnody for Five Actors" is a ghost poem for its subjects and its inclusion in On Actors and Acting: Essays by Alexander Knox (ed. Anthony Slide, 1998) is maddening because it is accompanied only by the note, "This poem is from an unpublished manuscript titled Screams and Speeches. The five actors named here were all victims of the Blacklist." First of all, you can't drop the existence of an entire manuscript at the very end of a slim selected works and expect the interested reader not to scream, especially when the only copy the internet feels like telling me about seems to be held in a collection in the Library and Archives of Canada, which feels currently even less accessible than the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Secondly, and speaking as a person who has been called out for the density of allusion in their stories and poetry, this poem could have done with some notes. The editor was obviously concerned enough about name recognition to parenthesize Julie Garfield as John and Bud Bohnen as Roman, but then why not list their dates so that the reader can see for themselves that all five actors died between 1949 and 1952, mostly of heart ailments, stressed by the hounding of the FBI and HUAC, at the grandly superannuated ages between 39 and 59? If you don't know that Mady Christians originated the title role of John Van Druten's I Remember Mama (1944), then her verse will make much less sense, but catching that one makes me wonder what other references I may be missing, such as in the stage work of Canada Lee or J. Edward Bromberg. Lastly, since it's the only poem I have ever read by Alexander Knox—instantaneously in October, but it's been a rough fall—if he wrote any others I'd like to be able to read them, even if just for comparison. Slide mentions his wicked limericks in the introduction, but unforgivably includes none.

We know by now that time does not take sides. )

With this one example to go by, he was a better playwright than poet, but except for the self-deprecation which should definitely have hit the cutting room floor, it's hard to want to edit much out of a poem with so much anger at the injustice of a country that wastes its artists in scapegoating xenophobia, besides which there's at least one good line per actor and sometimes more. He wouldn't even have been living in the United States by the time of its writing, having burned off the last of his contract with Columbia by the end of 1951. He hadn't burned off his anger. No reason he should have. I may be confused by the existence of his Hollywood career, but I'm still pissed about the politics that snapped it short. The twentieth century could stop coming around on the guitar any measure now. On Sunday, I'll be at the HFA.

When I found out how young Hayashi Niina is, I felt like the world was playing a trick on me. Going into More! Mi Amore unprepared, I assumed Niina was the older sister type. How very wrong I was! Born in 2011, Hayashi Niina is all the proof you need that I cannot judge how old someone is based on looks alone.

Yasshii

Immediately after the release of the group's most recent single, I was lucky to have Juice=Juice superfan [personal profile] luckyzukky to inform me of the story so far. Born in Aichi in a world where Maeda Atsuko was one year away from announcing her graduation from AKB48 and the release of Morning Musume's comeback single, I would like to say that Niina—whose official nickname is Yasshii—had a normal childhood, but right from the get go, she was enrolled in the Hello! Project kenshuusei whilst in the fifth year of elementary school in 2023. By 2024, her performances during the annual kenshuusei concert were winning the praise of judges, attention that no doubt aided her in being selected to record a solo song for mobile game, MementoMori. Regardless of that attention, however, and perhaps a crucial difference between the management of Hello! Project and their peers, Niina's story is not one of luck or chance, but talent. Her early start and her hard work helped her cultivate a strong vocal style that resulted in her again being picked by judges this year in the annual kenshuusei concert as a highlight of the show. A month later, and group leader, Dambara Ruru was knocking at her door with the news that she had been selected to join Juice=Juice, the first member of Hello! Project's thirty-fifth generation to become a member of one of the established groups.

This has to be the shortest entry I have ever written for our Wednesday idol profiles but I wanted to make sure I spoke about Niina this year, during these moments when so little is documented outside of twitter and niche message boards. At the time of writing, the wiki tells me Niina has only been in Juice=Juice for just over five months, and I still can't get over the fact that this girl with such presence and such a voice is only in her second year of middle school.

Let's talk about Niina again in the future, friends, because I am sure we're going to be hearing from her a lot more in 2026!

not even 20 pages through (aka just the introduction) of 'addiction by design' - a book about gambling, and i'm already staring in the middle distance of how word for word this type of addiction psychology could go for basically every social media algorithm & UI dark pattern & gacha & viral bait engagement post/media & ai addiction.

necessary read, can already tell it's going to be one of those books that's mission critical.

but man! genuinely nauseated over here to see how virulent it is across media/technology as a whole.

"Growing up, August 15 always meant two things for my family: my mother's birthday and the first day of the CNE, a giant traveling fair that would park itself on Toronto's waterfront for the last three weeks of summer. We'd get there early, and by 10AM, there'd always be some poor bastard lugging around a galactic-scale giant teddybear that was offered as a prize at one of the midway games.

Now, nominally, the way you won a giant teddybear was by getting five balls in a peach basket. To a first approximation, this is a feat that no one has ever accomplished. Rather, a carny had beckoned this guy over and said, "Hey, fella, I like your face. Tell you what I'm gonna do: you get just one ball in the basket and I'll give you one of these beautiful, luxurious keychains. If you win two keychains, I'll let you trade them in for one of these gigantic teddybears."

Why would the carny do this? Because once this poor bastard took possession of the giant teddybear, he was obliged to conspicuously lug it around the CNE midway in the blazing, muggy August heat. All who saw him would think, "Hell if that dumbass can win a giant teddybear, I'm gonna go win one, too!" Charitably, you could call him a walking advertisement. More accurately, though, he was a Judas goat.

Digital platforms have the ability to give out giant teddybears at scale. Because digital platforms have the flexibility that comes with running things on computers, platforms can pick out individual platform participants and make them King For the Day, showering them in riches that they will boast of, luring in other suckers who will lose everything (
pluralistic.net/2023/02/19/twiddler/). That's how Tiktok works: the company's "heating tool" lets them drive traffic to Tiktok performers by cramming their videos into millions of random people's feeds, overriding Tiktok's legendary recommendation algorithm. Those "heated" performers get millions of views on their videos and go on to spam all the spaces where similar performers hang out, boasting of the fame and riches that await other people in their niche if they start producing for Tiktok: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys

Uber does it, too: as Veena Dubal documents in her work on "algorithmic wage discrimination," Uber offers different drivers wildly different wages for performing the same work. The lucky few who get an Uber giant teddybear hang out in rideshare groupchats and forums, trumpeting their incredible gains from the platform, while everyone else blames themselves for "being bad at the app," as they drive and drive, only to go deeper and deeper into debt: h
ttps://pluralistic.net/2023/04/12/algorithmic-wage-discrimination/#fishers-of-men

Everywhere you look online, you see giant teddybears."

one of the many weird little things i've learned about being in the ex-/k/ server is the concept of "flag cones" (for when a general country flag is displayed on a pole but has a suspiciously conical shape). some are less "fake looking" than others; but for a particularly fake-looking example, see this reddit post. generally this depends if the flag is straight up painted on, or if there's more like a conical mannequin shape underneath where a real flag is draped over (aljazeera screenshot example).

once when you've seen one you can't *not* notice them everywhere in news screenshots/NATO briefings, etc, lol. sometimes it makes for a fun drinking game to spot when you need something other than The News

there's technically similarly adjacent things called "flag spreaders" that are another step closer to how flags authentically drape but i don't see those as much in big news screenshots.

Hi, everyone! I’m templefugate, your host for the week.

As a reminder, we are using a new posting schedule. Sundays are for Lonely Prompts and sharing the fills that you completed during the week, Tuesdays and Thursdays are for new themes and prompts, and Saturdays will remain a Free for All.

Today's theme is clothing. Prompts should have anything to do with the stuff people need to not be naked.

+ The X-Files, Dana Scully & Fox Mulder, wearing a two-person horse costume for an undercover field mission
+ Knights of Guinevere, Frankie, wearing her favorite Gwen T-shirt
+ Any, any, hand-knitted mittens, hats, and scarves

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2025 collection. See further notes on this new option here.
